At 0320 on 1 March, a time of gale force winds and heavy rain, the 4S83 Tilbury - Coatbridge Freightliner shed 5 containers at Hardendale, just north of Shap summit. The WCML had to be closed. Here are 18 photos briefly showing the effect of the closure on train services, but concentrating on work to reopen the line.

14 photos of this vintage luxury train, acquired by WCRC in November 2008. Some of the coaches used to be based at Carnforth in the 1980s when they were used between 1985 and 1989 on the Royal Scotsman, then operated by the Great Scottish & Western Rly Co. However, the GSWR decided to replace the train with 1960s Pullmans. The Royal Scotsman first ran with its new coaches in 1990, and they are still used on today's VSOE Royal Scotsman. A Scottish Highland Rly Co was formed to run a rival Queen of Scots luxury train using the old Royal Scotsman coaches, but the venture was not a success and only ran in 1990.

Photos taken during a Pathfinder tour behind D1015 Western Chamption from Tame Bridge to Edinburgh via Carlisle and Newcastle. This was the first ever visit of a class 52 to Scotland. There are also seven photos of William Hedley's locomotive Wylam Dilly, built in 1813 like his better known Puffing Billy. They are the oldest surviving locos in the world.
